2020 Covid Hero Award

Toast of Champaign has chosen Minta Herold as our Covid Hero Award recipient. Minta is so quietly efficient that it is easy to overlook her myriad contributions to our chorus. In this unusual year, she has gone above and beyond to be sure our chorus stays connected and engaged. When director, Jackie Compton, decides on what we need to do for our Zoom meetings, she contacts Minta who simply “makes it happen”. Minta provides not only expert technical skills, but also invaluable support and encouragement to all our members. We could not have navigated this year without her. (The certificate reads: "For rising above the crowd during this most unusual and stressful time.")
Special Requests 2020 - We have been rehearsing every other week at the Hessel Park Pavilion. One rehearsal we were asked to wear Illini shirts so that we could have our picture taken and a video done for the University of Illinois. Apparently, they love our rendition of the National Anthem. So, a good friend of Minta Herold, Brad Hart, took our picture after we performed on video the National Anthem that will be used at upcoming UIUC athletic events.

WOMAN OF NOTE 2020 - Glenda Carpenter

Even though Glenda is a 25-year member of Sweet Adelines, she is a relatively new member of the Toast of Champaign chorus and we are SO glad she joined us! She brought her tremendous creativity and a seemingly infinite supply of energy. Glenda helped us think outside the box as chair of our last show, taking us on a crazy road trip culminating in a Christmas program. Every detail from show props, food and script, to decorations that were impeccably planned and executed, and a lot of fun for those of us involved.
Glenda's show plans orchestrated the formation of multiple chorus quartets, in which she also sang. She had us singing parts we never would have imagined ourselves singing.
Glenda's energy is contagious! She is on the physical warm-up team and gets us moving and laughing as if no one is watching!
Glenda's talents and energy don't stop with Sweet Adelines. She is an avid golfer, tennis player and a committed grandmother. We are extremely luck to have her as part of Toast of Champaign. THANKS, GLENDA, FOR ALL YOU DO!

WOMAN OF NOTE 2019 - Jackie Compton

Toast of Champaign has chosen our director, Jackie Compton, as this year’s Woman of Note. An accolade long overdue, she has directed our chorus for nearly 40 years, and still brings to us unending enthusiasm and a wonderful sense of humor as she elevates us to a level she knows we are capable of. A former music educator herself, she continues to grow and learn each year through her attendance at music schools and active participation on the Regional Management Team. She knows how to impart that knowledge in a way every chorus member cannot only understand but also embrace along with her. Her contributions to our chorus go far beyond being our director; she is our friend.
